| Things I suggest you have ready before you pick up your new pup or rescue. |
A first aid kit for dogs is a great and handy tool for any pet owner. You can purchase a first aid kit from most
pet stores or you can make one yourself.
#2. Leach and Collar
Depending on the age of your dog you may need more than one collar. I suggest a regular flat buckle collar.
(I do not suggest a snap collar because the plastic can break and leave your pup without proper
identification) I suggest you have at least 3 leash's one for daily walks and 2 backups.
#3. Crate
I don't care if you are getting a pup or an adult you should get a crate. A dogs crate is his den. A crate is a
good safe environment for your dog.
#4. Feeding supplies
You will need at least 2 indoor chew proof feeding bowls as well as outside bowls. I personally like the
stainless steel because they are easy to clean and do not tear up.
You will also need to stock up on food before you get the dog or pup. I would suggest you ask the breeder
what type of food your pup has been on and wean your pup to whatever food you choose. This goes the
same for rescues if you can find out what he/she has been fed. Feeding the same food will help with upset
stomach problems.
#5. Toys
What dog doesn't want a few great toys. I personally love the Kong it is a great toy for dogs of all ages and
extremely tough. Make sure when you purchase a you are careful to get toys that are safe for you pup or
rescue. Flimsy toys with aggressive chewers can be dangerous.
#6. Basic grooming supplies
You will need a brush for daily or weekly grooming.
A toothbrush to keep the teeth as clean as possible to prevent future problems.
Nail clippers to keep the nails trimmed so they do not scratch people accidentally.
#7. Clean up supplies
Nobody wants it to happen but accidents in the house are more than likely going to happen. Instead of
getting upset be prepared. You will need a safe cleaner that will not harm you pets. I use vinegar/water
solution because it will get rid of odor and the pup will not smell the old urine and pee there again.
I also suggest a pooper scooper to keep the area of your yard clean that you don't want poop. If you teach
your pup where to go it is easier to keep your yard clean too.
#8. People contacts.
Before you bring you new dog home you should already have found at least a vet. I also suggest you be on
the look out for a groomer (if needed), a trainer, dog walker if needed and a boarding kennel. Don't forget to
check out an emergency vet clinic too.
#9. I suggest if you are going to leave your dog in a back yard and your fence is under 6 feet tall you
purchase a stand alone dog kennel that is 6 foot tall. Just for your dogs personal safety. Most Border Collies
can jump 4 foot fences.
